The preamps are excellent!!!
I did an AB test using an AKG 414 ULS recording voice between the SmPro limited with a Dominator II and a Universal Audio LA 610 (610 preamp, limited by T4) I added 3dbs of gain to 4.5Khz and 200Hz on the LA610 and the results were very close!!!
I padded the mic -20dbs for both units. The Black Lion preamps dealt with this with the gain on about 1 while the UA gain was pushed at +10 and the level was at about 7!
Loads of gain on this unit. I would say you could run ribbons through these with no problem, it is the deal of the century! 8 pristine super detailed mic pre's for less than $400!
I remember when I first got it, I ran my KSM44 on omni through it and thought I'd have to wait until I got a better room to record anything through these cause it was so detailed and sensitive I could hear every object in the room, carpet crunching etc. I didn't think to use the pad. Now I know better. Thanks a bunch!
I got your 828 MKII clock and analog upgrades too and I've mastered a national release through it (http://www.timeless-stylus.com) with results that rival Sony/Universal engineers to the point that an artist that I mastered a track for (Lionel Neykov) actually had a mastering engineer who did David Bowie's last album use my track as a reference when she mastered his album cause he was unhappy with her results.
You guys are the bomb. You bring A grade hardware to the consumer market.
Hats off to you!
