We are offering the following modifications for the Apollo X6, X8, X8P and X16:

XB Internal Clock Mod (XB Clock Only)

Digital

  • – New internal, ultra-low-jitter, XB word clock with proprietary implementation
  • The clock modification alone makes a big difference to the A/D and D/A conversion stages. It opens up the soundstage and removes grit!

Premium Mod (Premium Analog I/O; No XB Clock)

Analog

  • – New, high performance op-amps on all analog inputs and outputs
  • – New, high-grade signal path capacitors on analog inputs (not available on X16)
  • – New, high-grade decoupling capacitors on mic preamps, Hi-Z inputs, and headphone amplifiers (not available on X16)
  • – New, high-grade decoupling capacitors on line outputs (X16 only)
  • – New, high-grade decoupling capacitors used for global power filtration
  • Improving the performance of the analog stage circuits makes a drastic difference for tracking, mixing, and mastering (expect amazing micro-dynamics and space)!

Digital

  • – Proprietary decoupling on all A/D and D/A converters using methods found in our Signature, FM, and XB modifications
  • Our approach to converter decoupling reduces noise generated during the conversion process, leaving you with crisp, clear audio!

XB Mod (Premium Analog I/O & XB Clock)

Mod Rating

We often get asked our opinion on how one interface compares to another, so we’ve decided to create a rating system based on subjective A/B listening tests. The scale is from 1-10, with “1” being unimpressive audio quality and “10” being true audio excellence. This is an exponential scale, so going from “1” to “2” isn’t nearly as big of a jump as going from “9” to “10”.
Please keep in mind, we only modify an interface if we can make a significant improvement to the sound. All of our ratings are ultimately a matter of opinion. To view how we rate all of our mods, click here.

Prior to purchasing my UAD Apollo x8 with the full premium and XB mod, I’d owned other converters by Universal Audio, Digidesign, Yamaha, Presonus, RME, Apogee, Black Lion and Prism. I’d re-clocked many of them using BLA micro clocks 2 and 3xb. In recent years I’d moved into the UAD ecosystem for the low latency monitoring I needed working with singers, but specialising with voices made me particularly fussy with the front end leading up to the converters. I’d settled on Prism and BLA Sparrow White, which I still use. I hoped that upgrading to the X series would come reasonably close, once the black lion mods were done.
Well, it does. While the Apollo X’s are an improvement on the previous generations it was never going to replace my Prisms anytime soon. But now I find myself using the modded X’s alongside my Sparrow and the Prisms, just purely out of preference for the genre and material.
Prisms sound incredibly open. The Sparrow sounds tight and precise. The modded x8 has clarity and a shimmer in the top end. Along side unison and UAD plugin options, I never feel compromised when tracking a vocal, or any instrument for that matter.
    Apollo now feels… classy.
